Good day everyone! Today I am happy to announce the first in a line of visiting authors for our new Spotlight On series.  Here at Simple Journey Ministries, it is our goal to help encourage, inspire, and support each one of you on your journey towards Godly womanhood. Every author that will be spotlighted, has something to share just for YOU!

Our kick off author is Erica Johns of Supermoms Health and Wellness. Her goal is to encourage and support moms on their journey to achieving a more healthful lifestyle. Erica is the author of Supermom’s Guide to Healthier Eating for Beginners and Beyond and Supermom’s Simple Guide to Super Salads. I own both of these books, so I can speak personally about how much they have helped me. When I began reading Healthier Eating I remember thinking, “I wonder if there will be anything new in here for me?” WOW! Was I pleasantly surprised. The title speaks truth that it truly is for beginners and beyond! Super Salads is GREAT! If you visit the Journey to Simplicity often, you know that I love talking about how to make salads more exciting that just lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers. This book has been on my counter, in use daily, since I first read it! Today Erica blesses us with information about the philosophy of healthy eating. Enjoy!

My Healthy Eating Philosophy: People First!

There are a lot of different ideas about what a healthy diet consists of. Some people focus on a vegetarian or vegan diet, organics, cutting out processed foods, whole foods, and now raw foods has become a more common idea. Some people are able to apply their health goals to their lives very consistently, which can be wonderful.

However, I’ve known people that refused to eat food served when they were guests in someone’s home. I’ve known people that didn’t even get together with other people because they had completely isolated themselves with their food rules.

In short, I’ve seen a lot of healthy eating turn into unhealthy living because people were not willing to be flexible and to care for other people more than they cared about how they eat.*

One of my life philosophies is “people first.” In my life people come before money, before things, before selfishness, and also before food issues.

To me, my health is important. But so are the people in my life. I do not want to be the person that lectures their friends about the soda they drink or the processed food they eat. I do not want to be the person that brings weird stuff to potlucks that nobody will touch. And I definitely don’t want to be the person that doesn’t go and be with others because of food issues.

Here’s an example of how this works in real life: Last Sunday was a perfect example since there was a luncheon after church. They were serving subs, chips, veggies, and other picnic-y sorts of things. I wasn’t going to get picky about the white bread or nitrates in the lunch meats. I ate subs and a few chips, drank water, skipped dessert, and all was well. No big deal. Just eat and have fun with the people in your life! I have 20 other meals this week that I can eat healthier than that!

So please know that when I share my ideas with you it comes from a place of saying, “Hey! This worked for me. Maybe it’ll work for you.” If not, then hey–I like ya just the same no matter what you eat! ;)

*Please know I’m not talking about people who have serious medical needs to avoid certain foods.

“The person who will eat anything

is not to despise the one who doesn’t;

while the one who eats only vegetables is not to pass judgment

on the one who will eat anything;

for God has accepted him.”

~Romans 14:3

Supermom’s Health and Wellness was started in January 2005 with my first product, Supermom’s No-Lice Hair and Body Spray, and the complete No-Lice System that helps families prevent and eliminate head lice without using harmful chemicals.
Since that time, I’ve been been working to expand the business to incorporate the many wonderful products that have helped me and my family live healthier in everyday life.
My first book, Supermom’s Simple Guide to Healthier Eating for Beginners and Beyond, was released in November 2007, and http://SupermomsHealthAndWellness.com was created in an effort to continue to help families achieve their personal health goals in ways that will succeed.
My husband Dave and I have been married for nearly 17 years and have six wonderful children, ages 5-15. We live in central Kentucky.
