Learning to Live Financially Free , by Marybeth & Curt Whalen

A Review

When I first opened Learning to Live Financially Free, I had a pre-conceived thought that I would be reading more about a method of spending money wisely in a variety of areas.  I couldn’t have been more surprised by the journey that Marybeth & Curt Whalen took me on! Marybeth & Curt tell their story of a debt stressed life, how they got there, and how they returned to a place of financial freedom. The journey is one which most every family in America can relate to.

One of the aspects of the book that I found to be unique is the manner in which Marybeth & Curt tell their story. Each shares their particular views and thoughts on a topic. This methodfinancial freedom presents a strong opportunity for a husband and wife to work through the book together and relate to finances as a couple, which also allows for each to see how the other might view issues differently.

The Whalens not only present their journey to financial freedom in a realistic way, they also demonstrate the need to have God as the leader of the Journey. Each topic includes coordinating Bible verses and questions for study. I found this to be an excellent and non-condemning way for couples to be discussions on each issue, especially those that are most sensitive. I have been counseling people for a long time on the great importance of God in this journey, as well as the integral aspect of a couple being willing to work together. Marybeth & Curt bring this point across clearly and sensitively. Not to leave you wondering how to apply their common sense approach, the Whalens offer resources to assist you on your journey to financial freedom, including websites and Internet information.

For couples who are tired of reading plans that tell you step by step exactly what to do and how to do it from a perspective that seems out of reach, they will find themselves not only refreshed by the inspirational, yet realistic, information contained in Learning to Live Financially Free, but they will also become more comfortable with their current situation and the ability to free themselves of debt, allowing God to guide them along the way. This is a book that every couple who desires financial freedom the way God intended it should own.
