It’s apple season! Apples are so inexpensive and delicious right now, you just can’t help but put a bunch of them in your cart. All those awesomely aromatic apples say autumn all the way around. IT is said that
an applea day keeps the doctor away, right? But what happens when your littletons leave apples with a few bites taken out of them? What can you do? DON’T throw them out! If you end up with half eaten or used apples, have no fear; you do not have to discard those delicious fruits!
- Cut and un-eaten apple flesh away and save in a container. At the end of the week, make a fresh batch of applesauce. This will not make a tremendous amount of applesauce, but it will be enough to accompany a breakfast item. It can be spread on toast and sprinkled with a bit of cinnamon. Or you can use a dollop on top of a bowl of oatmeal.
- Make a pie. This is really easy when you have an abundance of partially eaten apples. Collect several in a bag and keep them in your fridge. Then prepare them as you would normal apples for a pie. No one will ever know they were brown leftover apples!
- Prepare mini apple crisps. Cut unused apples into smaller chunks. Place chunks in small ceramic tart bowls or mugs. Sprinkles some cinnamon and sugar and top with oatmeal (ground into crumbs). Place a few pieces of butter on top. Cover with plastic wrap. When ready to use, remove plastic wrap and cover with paper towel. Place in microwave and cook on high for 3-5 minutes (depending on size of cup and amount of apples).
- Serve something special for breakfast. Slice uneaten apple. Melt butter in a small frying pan. Place apple slices in. Heat on medium for 1-2 minutes and flip. Sprinkle cinnamon on top. Makes a GREAT breakfast or snack!
- Make a snack that lasts and is easy to transport. Cut your apples into thin slices. Place them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Set your oven to the lowest setting and place the baking sheet inside. Let these dry for a few hours. Dried apples are an excellent accompaniment to cereal (hot and cold), ice cream, cookies, pies, cakes, or just by themselves.
Buono Appetito!
