Helping Children to Organize Books

It can often be daunting to a mom to teach children how to keep their books stored on a bookshelf. It may seem as though they should be able to do this task easily, but the fact is it can often be overwhelming; not just for mom, but for children as well.

One way you can teach your children to keep their bookshelves organized is to use colored electrical tape. Determine how you would like their bookshelves organized. I personally, like to see books organized by shape and size in my children’s rooms. However, for our homeschooling shelves, I like them organized by subject. You may want your children to organize their books in a combination of methods, size, seasons, reading levels, etc.

Get electrical tape (or any tape you can find that is available in a variety of colors and is durable) in a variety of colors. For practical purposes in this entry, let us say that you want to organize the books by size only. Choose a color for each size book. Place a small piece of the colored tape for each size on the bottom of the binding of each book according to its size. Now, organize the shelves with your children, showing them to group all books with the same colored tape together.

Each time they read a book, train them to return the book to appropriate color coded section. No more chaotic bookshelves!

These are my thoughts.
