Organized Closets for Christmas

Closet organization can be one of the most rewarding organizational tasks that we perform within our homes. Not only can it be one of the most rewarding, but it truly  helps us to de-clutter our lives in a way that other daily tasks don’t. When you de-clutter a closet do you notice how different you feel when you enter the closet? The very first time you have to look for something in that closet, there is just something different about how you see things. You think to yourself how much better you function when things are organized. You promise yourself that you won’t allow it to get out of control again. You make every effort to do that, yet somehow over time, the closet becomes…well let’s just say some habits may return. The fact remains that you can set some check points in place to help keep up on a regular basis. Now, is the perfect time of year to get this started with one simple method that can keep you on the path to an organized closet, while incorporating those wonderful new items that may be in need of a place in your closets over the next few weeks.

The best method I know for keeping closets organized is one that you could call, “One in One Out.” This simply means that for every item coming in another item must be removed. If you purchase a new shirt, then you must donate an existing shirt in your closet. This helps keep your closet manageable. I have shared this tip before, but it is essential at this time of year especially. If you know you will need to purchase new clothes for your children for Christmas programs, are gifting them clothing for Christmas, or know that other special people (i.e. grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends) will be giving clothing to you or your children, Take an afternoon to go through each person’s closets and remove one item for every item that will be coming in. This is simpler than it appears on the outset. If a daughter will be getting a new skirt for a Christmas Cantata, simply remove a skirt that is rarely worn or too small and place it in a bag for donating to a charitable organization. If you are replacing socks for a son, remove as many pairs as you will be bringing in. Take time to go through the closets now, and you will be ahead of the game.

These are my thoughts.
